Apache Railway, Snowflake, Arizona, 3 June 1983
My friend Richard mentioned our visit to the Apache Railway in an e-mail today, so that was enough to make today's post my photos Alcos in Snowflake. We were on a road trip around the Rocky Mountain states that had included a chase of UP 3985 over Sherman Hill, a ride on the Georgetown Loop RR before the high trestle was built, chasing a coal train over Tennessee Pass and the Rio Grande F9s on an MOW train in Utah, and a stop by the Grand Canyon. We were heading east on I 40 and after spending the night in Flagstaff, Arizona and the people at Snowflake were very welcoming, handing out Southwest Forest Products baseball caps and giving us the run of the place.
I got roster shots of a lot of their Alcos, perhaps all of them, then we watched them put the train together, but before they hit the main line to the ATSF interchange, we had to cut and run to get me to Gallup, New Mexico in time to catch the Southwest Ltd. to LA and back home.
