White-crowned Sparrow juvenile by Jackie B. Elmore 1-5-2018 Lincoln Co. KY

Notice a bird tick (Ixodes brunneus?) on the head of this white-crown. A phenomenon known as "tick paralysis", caused by some unknown substance in the saliva of a female tick, can have a debilitating effect on a host bird. ( Dr. Mullen, Auburn University study)
