Minion, Wrecking Ball.
I would like to apologize in advance, The quality maybe a little low which was completely out of my hands and the lip syncing maybe a little off but apart from that enjoy.
My inspiration for my Minion Wrecking Ball animation came from a student’s animation video which showed a female Alien singing “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor. The basis of this piece of work was to express satirical humour mocking the Minion who is the character in my animation. The irony of the situation is that he is seen on screen singing the words from Miley Cirus’s Wrecking Ball, “I came in like a wrecking ball”, when suddenly a huge wrecking ball appears knocking the Minion off the screen. I started this process by using the storyboard that I had created for reference material. This gave me direction towards the goal / output that I was aiming to achieve.
The opening scene sees the Minion sliding in at speed. His body tilts over to the left, before straightening up; as he comes to a halt. Although he has his back to the audience you can sense his bemusement by the gesturing of his hands, as he scratches his left cheek, and the movement of his head, as he takes in the surroundings of his bleak environment. He shrugs his shoulders signifying his puzzlement but also a resigned acceptance of his current predicament. Suddenly he springs into life twisting his body to the left before letting it recoil to the right as he jumps up and spins round in mid-air before landing on his feet. He is paralysed with fear realising that the audience is aware of his mistake. His rapid blinking signifies his realisation of this fact. Out of desperation he tries to reassure the audience by greeting them with an over welcoming expression of affection. He is then overcome by the realisation of his error inwardly shrivelling up into a depressed state.
Suddenly his eye opens and a smile comes to his face as he begins shaking with excitement realising that the music is about to start. When he starts to sing his nervousness can be seen by the fact that he doesn’t make eye contact with the audience, his eye wanders lazily about looking forward but towards the ground. As the music starts to play in the background I have tried to build as much realism into the scene by synchronising the movement of his lips to the words of the song. At this point it can be seen that I added a walk cycle to the animation so that it had a greater element of body movement.
As the animation reaches a crescendo the Minion can be heard singing the words “I came in like a wrecki…”. This coincides with the literal and metaphorical delivery of the punch line as a huge wrecking ball swings across the screen taking both the Minion and the audience by complete surprise. The wrecking ball then returns to the screen dripping with gory blood. This final scene was created to add dark humour to the end of the animation and leave with mixed emotions of humour and surprise.
