On the steep slope of the so-called "Cocks' Hill", they carried the building materials on their backs and shoulders up the white rocks, as if the Virgin Mary had marked it out for them with her snow-white glow. The church was completed in 1697 and since then it has been visited year after year by crowds of mourners and pilgrims devout to Mary. In 1844, Pope Gregory XVI granted the church a privilege of pilgrimage for Marian feasts.
