Terrified, confused and helpless, there is nowhere for the pod to go — at Taiji Japan
February 15th, 2015 - Striped Dolphin Slaughter — at Taiji Japan
Once again, an amazingly beautiful sunrise over the Taiji coastline was overshadowed by the torturous slaughter of 30-35 wild cetaceans.
In less than 45 minutes after sunrise, a sizeable and peaceful family pod of Striped Dolphins had been located amid the tranquil ocean waters - their home. But the tactical supremacy of the high-tech drive boats controlled by the dolphin hunters of Taiji, soon had them rattled with distress and confusion as they were driven towards their unknown future. As the boats attempted to manipulate their direction towards the Taiji Harbour, the pod split, resulting in half of the pod making a hasty retreat back to deeper waters, and their freedom. But regrettably, 30-35 individuals still remained and by 9:15am (after continual harassment by the hunting vessels, skiff boats, banging poles and slap paddles), the remaining pod had been secured within the harrowing waters of "The Killing Cove", where they await their imminent, agonising and inhumane death. As the dolphins were roped by the tail and dragged to the shoreline, the massacre begun, and remaining family members bare witness to their own horrifying and inevitable fate.
A graceless and unjustifiable practice once again casts a blood red cloak over the pristine waters of a beautiful coastline.
