Gift Horse

Gift Horse by Hans Haacke on the Fourth Plinth, Trafalgar Square. A wonderful piece of multifaceted political art. The reason the plinth was originally empty was it was supposed to contain an equestrian statue of William IV but there was not enough money raised so Haacke has played with that history and created the horse from an etching by the most English of artists George Stubbs. It epitomises the ravages of the market highlighted by the bow featuring a LED ticker of the London Stock Exchange. What better place than the Square to muse about power, money and history.
