- The impressive Piazza del Popolo - (3)
Piazza del Popolo (People's square) is one of the most popular squares in Rome and was the gateway to the city during Empire times.
In the square we can see the churches: Chiesa Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Basilica di Santa Maria in Montesanto (both seen in the larger photo), two apparently identical temples but that hide some differences.
In the center of the square is an Egyptian obelisk of 24 meters dedicated to Rameses II, known as Obelisco Flamínio. Located in the Circus Maximus from the year 10 BCE, it was transferred to Piazza del Popolo in 1589. Surrounding the obelisk four lions spouting water from their mouths.
On the sides we see two beautiful fountains:
- Fontana della Dea di Roma
- Fontana del Nettuno
