Our trainees let nothing daunt them. Rather than give up and go home when they almost drowned in the surf they persevered with the surf lifesaving training. I was impressed with their commitment. All of the time that these men were with us they were away from their jobs and not able to provide for their families. With some of these men we were literally starting from scratch. They could dog paddle a short way but had no skill with freestyle swimming. Diving we put aside as not essential. Jump in, push off and swim as best you can. With time came fitness and better technique. Not good enough for the surf though, especially not the powerful, dumping shore break of Kuta.
