When it comes to getting a job done, there's an immense amount of pleasure to be had from employing simple tools. Hand planes and chisels, even picks and shovels. Such rudimentary things. Their simplicity belies the fact that they take a long, long time to master. But after a while, and much trial and error, you start to feel the pleasure of being intimately connected with your medium. The smell and the feel of that piece of hard maple you're shaving. You know precisely where the point of your axe will enter the soil before you swing. And it makes you smile with pride. What prolongs that smile is that you know that there's still a lot more to learn.

 

Why am I telling you all this? Well, this reflects how I prefer to capture a photograph. Simple cameras pointed at simple scenes. Nothing complicated. A proud moment when it starts to work. But a plethora of discovery and learning ahead to enjoy.
