On Experimental Art, Allan Kaprow:

"Occidental art has two avant-garde histories: art-as-art and art-as-life. Putting it simply, art-as-art defends art as a practice separated from life and everything else, art-as-life defends that art is connected to life and everything else. In other words, there is art for art's sake and art for life's sake. Those who practice the former tend to be specialists; those who tend to practice the latter tend to be generalists."
